Thanet RNLI Community Safety

Respect the Water

This my very first blog as an RNLI Community Safety Officer. I decided finally to start this blog, after some help from fellow bloggers. I am absolutely passionate about spreading the Respect the Water message to as many people as possible to help keep them safe whilst enjoying the coast. Hopefully, I can spread this passion and how important it is to ‘Respect the Water’.

It’s been hectic

I really don’t know where the past five months have gone! This is something I’ve been mulling over the past week. I suppose it’s part of the inevitable ‘taking stock of the past year’ that one carries out during every December.

Since taking on the RNLI Volunteer Community Safety Officer role it’s been hectic to say the least. I have been out and about spreading the Respect the water (RNLI’s campaign that puts drowning prevention at the heart of everything the RNLI does) message to as many local community groups and businesses as possible. Including: churches, the local mosque, open swimmers, business network groups,  Neighbourhood PCSO’s, sea anglers, dog walkers, ramblers, visiting cafes and restaurants to name a few.

The local community have been absolutely first class, giving me huge encouragement and support. I set up and ran a recent successful joint Community Safety event with Kent police, in Batchelor’s, a lovely local patisserie on Northdown Road, Cliftonville. It was great to speak with local people about coastal safety. I have also received brilliant support from my line manager, who despite his very busy work schedule has been always on-hand to offer advice.

I have plenty of plans for 2018 to help spread the Respect the water message to our communities. I do hope you stay with me on this journey. If you can help me spread the Respect The Water message to as many relatives, friends and work colleagues as possible that would be great.

Have a great Christmas and an enjoyable safe New Year.
